Baking, cake and pies, oh my!

December is here! This month we'll be focusing on everything baking. Our dramatic play area has been transformed into our bake shop, equipped with a variety of kitchen gadgets, cupcake tins, baking sheets, measuring cups and spoons! The children made predictions about what would happen if we baked a cake but left out a key ingredient. We found out that if you forget the baking powder, you get a flat cake, and if you forget the sugar, "Yuck!" The children had a blast using measuring cups to measure out the ingredients. We also practiced our math skills by learning how to cut a cake into 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8. The children created paper plate pies with cinnamon that smelled delicious!

Our artist of the month is Alberto Giacometti. Alberto Giacometti was a swiss sculptor who once said, "Artistically I am still a child with a whole life ahead of me to discover and create." The children made amazing recreations of Giacometti's "Man Pointing."

October and November!

We sure have had a busy few months here at the Pearson Street Preschool! In October, the children focused their learning on the seasons, specifically fall. We created our leaf men, Q-tip skeletons, ghost feet and spooky jack o' lanterns! We made predictions about how many seeds there would be inside a pumpkin and what the insides of the pumpkin would feel like. We carved a pumpkin, made pumpkin prints and even tasted pumpkin. It was everything pumpkin month! The children gathered for a fabulous Halloween party, and we went on a Halloween parade through the center of Andover. The children had a blast shouting, "Happy Halloween!" while the cars driving by honked and waved at us. Our October artist of the month was Paul Cezanne and November was Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was a Russian artist who was also a successful lawyer. Did you know that one of his paintings sold for $23 million! We should all become artists!

In November, the children had a blast taking turns as the cashier, stock person, and shopper in our farmer's market. We learned all about what people sell at farmer's markets and how important farmers are! What would we do without fruits and vegetables?!? The children tried a variety of unique fruits and vegetables including starfruit, quince, and turnips. We also focused on Thanksgiving, had our very own Thanksgiving feast with turkey sandwiches, mashed potatoes, carrots, and cranberry sauce all cooked up by the students and teachers.

Mr. Ed, our amazing music teacher, continues to sing songs based on our monthly themes and will take the occasional request. Sorry parents, he doesn't do Journey! Ms. Mary Beth also continues to run our weekly Movement classes where the children increase their body awareness, learn to wait their turn, increase their movement repertoires all while having a blast.

Stay tuned for December's blog post!

The Pearson Street Preschool is Open!

What a wonderful start! We opened our doors to some pretty amazing students on Tuesday, September 6th.  Many new friendships were formed, our classroom was explored, and toys were played with!  We have been taking the week to get the hang of the classroom routine, and together we made a list of some rules for our classroom. We have been learning each others names and finding out what kind of materials our classroom has to offer.  Once we got a break from the rain, the children enjoyed playing, climbing and jumping outside!

Now that we are getting more comfortable with the classroom and with each other, we will be moving into our curriculum. The curriculum will be based on the observations we have been taking and will incorporate the interests of the children.

Our First Two Students Have Enrolled!!!

We are so excited that our first two students have enrolled in our preschool! We can not wait to get to know these little guys better and to see them grow over the next two years!

Renovations of our space are moving forward! Our new floors should be installed next week, and then we can make the space a homey, welcoming, learning environment!

Our beautiful front doors! Parents will pull directly up to the front door, and our teachers will greet the students.
